To give you a deeper understanding of the vital work our HVAC technicians do and the dedication they bring to their craft, we sat down with two of our lead technicians, Ryan Brossman and Aaron Barcus, to discuss their experiences and insights:
Growing up working on the family farm, Ryan has been honing his technician skills for quite some time. He began working in HVAC while in college and has worked in both commercial and residential settings.
What is the most rewarding part about your job?
Serving customers and helping them solve problems. When helping customers reach their goals, you can make a lasting positive impact.
What skills have helped you be successful in your role?
Interpersonal Communication skills. Being a technician requires you to be customer facing, which gave me the opportunity to expand my comfort zone early in my career. It benefited me to know how to work under pressure, navigate frustration and disagreements, and lead productive conversations to ensure we meet all needs of our customer.
Is there something you wish more people knew about being an HVAC technician?
This career brings lots of great opportunities, flexibility, and variety. With that, it also comes with some complexities. Technicians need to be comfortable moving between technical, mechanical, and soft skills. But when you go to new jobs, you can learn something new each time. It keeps the job fascinating.
Do you have any advice for aspiring technicians?
This career is suited for those who are driven, curious, and have a high level of mechanical knowledge. There is always more to learn, so ask questions and know where to go for information.
Speaking personally, it is essential to prioritize your health and safety as a technician. The job can be physically demanding, so you must take care of yourself even when you need to get places quick. Maintaining a healthy diet, using sunscreen, and following safety guidelines contribute to your success in your position.
Aaron has been working on the Thermosystems team since 2019. As an expert in servicing various types of equipment, he goes wherever the job demands. He enjoys the satisfaction of solving problems and experiencing new adventures on jobs.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Being a problem solver. I enjoy making a positive change and providing a sense of security to people. Having a mix of equipment and people-focused work is also great.
What skills have helped you be successful in your role?
Being inquisitive, having an open mind, and always asking myself what the equipment is truly meant to be doing. Being a technician involves handling a wide range of tasks, so chasing knowledge about various subjects has been beneficial to me.
What traits do you think make a good technician?
Patience and interpersonal communication skills go a long way. Being honest and proficient in your communications is essential for developing long-term customer relationships.
