When Thermosystems first opened its doors, it was more than just the start of a business – it was the beginning of a vision. Six individuals, driven by passion and determination, set out to build something that would stand the test of time.
“Starting from scratch was challenging, but rewarding,” recalls co-founder Paul Pasternock. “We had to work lean, wearing multiple hats, always striving to do right by our customers.” Those early days were filled with long nights, countless problem-solving sessions, and an unshakable belief that integrity and teamwork would set Thermosystems apart.
Twenty-five years later, that belief has proven true. Our team has grown, our passion has deepened, and our commitment to authenticity remains at the core of everything we do. As we reflect on this milestone, we sat down with key members of our team – including Vice President of Sales and Marketing Paul Pasternock, President Mike Murray, Controller Nina Campos, Senior Sales Engineer Patrick Krause, and Estimator Pam Siciliano – to share the story of Thermosystems’ journey: how we embraced change, built lasting relationships, and shaped the company we are today.
The Early Days

Thermosystems began in a small office in Lombard, Illinois, with co-founders Paul, John, and Rick leading the charge. The company’s first major milestone came with securing a partnership with McQuay as our anchor manufacturer, a pivotal moment that set the course for our future. From the start, our growth was fueled by a relentless commitment to problem-solving and delivering top-tier solutions. Within our first year, we expanded by establishing a parts department, led by Ryan Kelly, and soon after, a service department. “We were a small team, working late into the night, doing whatever it took to get things done,” recalled Pam, one of our longest-serving employees. It was this dedication to solving problems, integrity, teamwork, hard work, leadership and empowerment that became the Thermosystems Way.
Growth Over The Years

Over the years, our journey has been one of continuous growth. Moving from Lombard to Elmhurst marked a major turning point, establishing our headquarters and setting the stage for the development of multiple departments and many partnerships. “We grew alongside our customers and team members,” noted Paul. There was a new energy in the team, fueled by fresh opportunities. With each step forward, our commitment to HVAC excellence deepened. “There has always been passion behind the work,” stated Mike, “and every team has consistently shown a commitment to collective success, which has allowed for truly transformative projects.”

As time went on, we expanded into Romeoville, Peoria, and Downtown Chicago. Our commitment to building meaningful relationships drove us to be close to our customers, ensuring we could offer hands-on support whenever and wherever needed. Our partnerships have also evolved – over the years, we’ve forged more than 20 new manufacturing partnerships, each contributing to the evolution of our product lines as new technologies emerged in the HVAC industry. While the landscape has shifted, one constant has been our unwavering commitment to investing in these relationships. Patrick Krause, one of our Senior Sales Engineers, says, “Constant communication has been the key to developing these relationships. We are always talking about the industry, learning, and evolving.” Our passion for building strong relationships has also shaped the way we partner with our customers.

"We’re committed to delivering the ideal solution for every customer, every time."
Patrick Krause, Senior Sales Engineer
Our sales team works hard to be a trusted advisor for every customer every step of the way, ensuring the best solutions are found. “Being face-to-face has been key to building trust. A personal touch is essential for lasting relationships,” Paul noted. “Our team takes the time to understand needs, collaborate, and see each project through. The trust our customers have placed in us has been invaluable, fueling our commitment and shaping the foundation of everything we do.”
Above all, our accomplishments would not have been possible without our greatest strength: our people. Our success is rooted in the strength of the culture we’ve built—a culture where we lift each other up. No one does anything alone. It’s the heart of who we are. It’s the Thermosystems Way. “People are always bouncing ideas off each other and helping one another. Teamwork is what makes us successful,” recalled Patrick when describing the Thermosystems environment. From six individuals to now standing at over 100, Paul shared that finding people who truly align with our core values, have innate talent, and are eager to grow has been a priority since day one. This has allowed teams to build confidence and highlight each member’s strengths.
“Seeing how many people have contributed to our success over the years has been incredibly fulfilling,” he added. “We seek individuals who are not only skilled but eager to grow.” This commitment to mentorship and professional development has allowed our staff to flourish. Nina shared that this sense of empowerment was one of the things that drew her to Thermosystems: “They gave me the opportunity to shine,” she said, highlighting how much she appreciated the trust our leadership team gave her from day one. As we continued to empower our staff, our business grew to include five departments. Mike Murray says, “It’s hard to imagine Thermosystems without the new teams. Every department plays a critical role in our success, allowing each team member to have the opportunity to grow and have a voice.”
Overcoming Challenges & Looking Ahead
Alongside our successes, the challenges we’ve faced have been just as crucial to our growth. The 2008 financial crisis tested our resilience, and the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to adapt in ways we never expected. But through it all, our commitment to our employees and customers never wavered. “During difficult times, our leadership made sure everyone felt supported,” Nina recalls. Pam adds, “When COVID hit, we focused on keeping our customers safe. It was a tough time, but we came through stronger than ever.”
Through industry shifts, new technologies, and unforeseen obstacles, our ability to evolve has defined us. “We’re not rigid,” says Pam. “We stay ahead of trends, keep an eye on market changes, and adapt.” This flexibility has allowed us to stay true to our mission while embracing the future with confidence.
Reflecting On 25 Years
"What makes this company is the people, Thermosystems’ success is rooted in its employees.”
Mike Murray, President
Our journey would not be possible without the talented individuals who have shaped our story. From fresh talent to long-standing team members, every individual has played a role in our success. “Seeing careers grow and flourish here has been incredibly fulfilling,” says Paul. “We want to give our people the right channels to develop themselves professionally,” Mike shared, speaking to how important empowerment is for the company.
Our remarkable team’s dedication and expertise have not only helped us navigate industry changes but have also turned every challenge into an opportunity for growth. The shift towards energy efficiency has been one of the most significant developments in the industry, and our team has embraced it with innovation and adaptability. “We offer solutions that fit the project, rather than forcing a project to fit a solution,” Patrick explains. This customer-centric approach has set us apart and will continue to guide us in the years ahead.
A Heartfelt Thank You & The Road Ahead
Reflecting on 25 years fills us with gratitude and excitement for the future. “My kids were just little when we started, and now they’ve grown so much,” Paul reflected, thinking back on the journey. “I’m proud of how we’ve grown from a small team into a company with a large presence in our market. This company has always looked for the best people, expected a lot, and given everyone the freedom to succeed.”
